Specialist Joinery Group (SJG) are Irelands premier manufacturers of bespoke joinery and fitted furniture, operating out of an 80,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Maghera, N. Ireland.
The company approached BEAM for advice on dust extraction from within their joinery workshop areas.
The manufacturing facility is spread across various areas where custom work is carried out using materials consisting of hardwoods, softwoods, MDF and ply boards. Extensive use of electronic sanding tools resulted in high volumes of dust being produced, gathering on all surrounding surfaces and lingering in the air, greatly reducing the indoor air quality within the premises.
A solution was required that would extract dust at the point of generation, greatly reducing the build-up of surface dust in working areas. The system was to be capable of covering several areas within the building, with the ability to be used simultaneously by up to 16 operators at any one time.
BEAM conducted a series of on-site surveys and consultations to establish the most appropriate solution to meet the requirements. A Scandvent Fine Dust system was installed which incorporated an automatic cleaning unit, a 90-litre dust container, and was suitable for placement outdoors. This was coupled with an energy efficient, high capacity low noise vacuum extract unit.
The units were ducted to 24 separate sanding tools on the factory floor using approximately 570m of vacuum ducting, covering 3 different areas within the facility. This on-tool extraction facility has resulted in the safe removal of dust at the point of generation.
Dust extraction has resulted in a huge reduction of surface dust throughout and reducing the amount of dust circulated in the air. This has led to improved air quality, with substantial health benefits to employees working in the vicinity. The system power consumption is directly linked to actual demand – providing energy and cost efficiency.
Dermot O’Hagan, Sales Director for Specialist Joinery Group, commented “As a result of growth in business, we undertook a large-scale extension which increased our HQ site to over 3 acres. As a result, we required additional solutions to extract dust at the point of generation within the joinery workshop areas.”
Dermot continued, “Having worked with BEAM on various dust extraction systems in our existing manufacturing facility for over 15 years, we knew they would provide us with expert advice and provide the correct specification to allow us to meet H&S requirements. They conducted a series of on-site surveys and consultations to establish the most appropriate dust extraction solution to meet our needs. The resulting dust extraction system specified has led to a dust free, healthy working environment with improved air quality which all our staff are benefiting from, as well as providing energy and cost efficiencies to the business.”
